FloGene

FloGene is a visual simulation of population genetics on a multi-touch surface. It is aimed to be used by introductory level college biology students. The design and development of FloGene are in collaboration with Chad Brassil from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

With FloGene, students will be able to run virtual experiments in a virtual petri dish on a multi-touch digital table to discover the relationship between key evolutionary concepts of selection, mutation, and drift in terms of allele frequencies. A conceptual emphasis is placed on the idea that evolution takes place in populations, and that those populations consist of individuals with genotypes that consist of alleles.

FloGene will be tested in an introductory biology class at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in the spring of 2013.
